Set Up Your Domain Through 1and1.com

By Adam  |  24 Jun 2015 10:00:00

If you're hoping to get your own eCommerce website started, you're likely to want your own domain. 1and1.com is a useful and popular service which you can use to get your own domain. In this post I'm going to talk a bit about choosing your domain and then how to get one with 1and1.com and use it for a Sellr store.

If you aren't sure what a domain actually is, allow me to explain; the domain is essentially the name of the URL you use for your website. www.[YourDomain].com, is a simple way to demonstrate what a domain is. If you’re starting a business online it's a good idea to have your own domain simply because it looks more professional. Choosing a name for your domain can be tough and the best thing to go for is your business name followed by a word or two related to your service. For example, if your company was called Shine Brighter and you sold lightbulbs, then a good choice for a domain would be www.ShineBrighterLightbulbs.com, it's just a small thing that will mean your website is more likely to come up when people search it on Google. People are more likely to simply be searching for lightbulbs than they are for your company specifically, which is why lightbulbs have to go in the URL.

Anyway, once you've set up your account on 1and1.com and purchased your domain, here's what you need to do next so that you can use that domain with Sellr. Once you've logged in to 1and1, you need to go to the 'Domains' section and click 'Manage Domains'. Beside the domain you wish to choose, you need to click on the downward pointing arrow which will give you some more options to choose from, under 'Domain Settings' you should see 'edit DNS Settings'. Once you've clicked on that, you should go to the "A/AAAA Records (IP Addresses)" where you need to make sure '1&1 IP address is selected.

No go to 'Domains'/'Manage Domains' and click on'Manage' Subdomains' for your domain name.

Then click on 'Create Subdomain' and create a subdomain for 'www'

Next click on 'Edit DNS Settings' in the 'Subdomain Settings'

In the 'A/AAAA and CNAME Records' section select 'CNAME' and then enter your Sellr URL. e.g. 55XXXXX.sellrstores.com

Click on 'Save',

After that, you're pretty much done! You then need to head over to the Sellr website and log in to your merchant account. You'll find the next stages of the process laid out for you if you click 'Website Domain Name' which is under the 'Website' tab. That should be simple enough, but just in case any unforeseen troubles do arise, do not hesitate to contact us! You can reach us be email at support@sellr.com or over the phone on 01225 422200. We're more than happy to help!
