Choosing Your Domain

By Adam  |  2 Sep 2016 12:00:00

What's your URL?

For your eCommerce website to be taken seriously as a professional business, you're going to need to buy your own domain. Sure, you could start out without a domain (for example, when using Sellr FREE) but you should absolutely get yourself a domain eventually. When buying a domain, however, there are a lot of things to take into account, because obviously, a site's URL is very important!

So, imagine you've been using a name for your business for sometime - let's say it's called Whambow and you sell cricket bats. Anyway, the time comes and you find that whambow[.com] is taken! What can you do? Well, one thing to try is going for ".co.uk" or one of the many other different suffixes you can get for a domain. Another thing which you might like to look into is buying a domain which already has some level of value to it: if a domain has been used in the past, this will be remembered by search engine algorithms and it will therefore rank more highly than a completely new domain. Other important factors to remember are that you need to remember is that a URL which contains your key search terms would be beneficial and shorter URLs are always better than longer ones (because it's easier for people to memorise shorter ones than longer ones.)

So I hope that gives you a good idea of the factors which need to be taken into consideration when buying your domain. If and when you do buy your domain, we have a set of guides which can help you to use your domain with Sellr: click here to find our domain guides. But if you don't even have an eCommerce website to buy a domain for yet, then sign up to Sellr now and get started for no cost at all!
