Finding a Gap in the Market

By Adam  |  19 Aug 2016 12:00:00

Time to get started.

The internet is huge and there's a lot of money to be made on it. If you've decided that you want to start an eCommerce website - good idea. The eCommerce industry is growing every day and more and more people are making money from it. Running your own website leaves you in control of everything you do, but you can't just make a website, sell any random products and then live off of it! You need to plan everything out perfectly and you need to find the gap in the market that you're going to fill.

So how can you find your gap in the market? Well, a good thing to do first is to make a list of all the products which you think you could easily sell on your website. Once you've written down all of the potential products which you could sell on an eCommerce website, then start noting down all of the groups and communities which you could target. Perhaps you could target the fandom of a cult classic video game or movie? You could then sell as much related merchandise as possible. Perhaps you could target a minority within society who will have slightly different needs from the average person and sell products which will be appropriate for alternate lifestyles and so forth. After this, try to tie together the products and groups you wish to target and you might just find you've got a good match! Also if there's any kind of eCommerce website which you have always wanted to see (but which does not exist) then there's a good chance that there are other people who want just that as well, meaning it could be a good idea for you're new business.

Hopefully this has been a useful guide to you for finding a gap in the market. This is always going to be an important step when planning a business, because if there is a gap which has not yet been filled, you will find it a lot easier for you to make some money out of this, than if you went into a highly competitive market.
