How to do Outbound Links

By Adam  |  12 Dec 2015 12:00:00

When you run a business which has a large internet presence, then there will be times when you need to provide outbound links which will take people to other websites. If you're reporting on a piece of industry news in a blog post and you want to source some facts that you are mentioning, then that would be a time you'd need outbound links. If you've been working with another business, then that is another time that you'd need to provide outbound links. The problem is, that you need to be sure that you're linking away correctly, because when used badly, outbound links can be harmful.

Obviously you want people to stay on your website for as long as possible, so linking away is something you won't be keen to do. Why would you want to get people off your website? Well, if you ensure that your links open up in a new window or a new tab, people will be taken to the other website while also remaining on your own website. So, even if the website your linking to is (in the customer's eyes) much more appealing than your own, they'll stay on your own in a separate tab. Thanks to this, the customer can return to your website later on, and even if they don't it will increase your dwell rate, which is good for SEO.

Plus, while nobody's entirely sure of the specifics of it, linking out to other websites (at least in moderation) can help to boost your own SEO. So, when you are linking out to other website, for whatever the reason, be conscious of keeping them on your site as well.
