Perfecting Your Elevator Pitch

By Adam  |  13 May 2016 12:00:00

One thing that business owners (especially owners of smaller businesses) should be familiar with, is the concept of an "elevator pitch." Don't worry if you don't know what that is (those who are new to the business world are not too likely to) as I am going to explain in today's blog post, as well as giving advice on how to perfect your own elevator pitch. It's a small thing, but it might just come in handy for you at some point.

An elevator pitch is a very succinct description of your business - what it does and what it stands for. The idea is that you imagine you're in an elevator and somebody gets in and asks what you do, you then need a description of that business which is short enough to be expressed between floors on an elevator. Perfecting your elevator pitch will come in handy in situations like this, but it's also that kind of thing you might be asked about at business networking events. If somebody asked for your elevator pitch and you stared blankly at them before explaining that you sell aprons and not elevators, you'd look a bit unprofessional.

So what makes a good elevator pitch? Well, you need to try and pinpoint what you think is the best thing about your business. If your products aren't that unique, but you give a large portion of your profits to charity you could say "I run an online shop that donates a lot of its money to charity" or something like that. Mention what makes you good and what makes you unique, but don't spend too much time talking or else you may defeat the whole object of giving an elevator pitch. Practice giving your elevator pitch to your friends and family, ask them to tell you what sounds good and what sounds bad. Hopefully this will be useful for you whenever you're trying to promote your eCommerce website through word of mouth! But if you don't even have an eCommerce website yet, sign up to Sellr now and get started for no cost at all.
