Google Rules

By Adam  |  15 Jun 2016 12:00:00

Whoogle? Yoogle.

Owners or eCommerce websites are dependent upon Google, because Google is the search engine which most people use and the main way that anybody is going to find your site in the first place. The title of the post doesn't mean "Google Rules" as in "they're the best" (although they are doing the best in the search engine world), rather it refers to the rules that they expect all websites to adhere to - if you break these rules then you may be penalised by Google, which can be very damaging.

So what are the rules of using Google? Well, they essentially just want everybody to play fairly. If you do something which you hope will artificially manipulate your rankings on Google, then that will be against the rules - the ideology that Google subscribes to is that everyone tries to make their websites good and user friendly and those sites which have the most useful information, the best content and the best user experiences will rank most highly. Factors like the number of links to a site are used to help decide the listings and people try to manipulate this by paying bloggers to write about them with a link back: but if Google finds out about this then they won't hesitate to penalise you and the blogger. Any service you use which promises to improve rankings is going to be against Google's terms of use, because they say the only true way to do this is to improve the quality of your website. Of course this is just a brief introduction and you can check here to find all of their terms.

So I hope that gives you a good idea of how you can be a good, respectable citizen in Google Street. If you ever get penalised, your site could just stop coming up on searches altogether - this could lose your eCommerce website loads of money! But if you don't even have an eCommerce website yet, then sign up to Sellr now and get started for no cost at all.
