How to Increase Sales On Your Ecommerce Website Part 1
Creating an E-Commerce Website is just the start. The internet is a bit different than the high street, because your shop does not initially have any passing traffic. In fact it doesn't even have a road in front of it, and no one knows it exists.
The first thing you need to do is to tell the search engines that you are there. You can either do this by logging into your Google account and telling it the url of your site, or you can put a link to your site somewhere on the internet which is spidered by search engines and you will be found from there.
If your domain name has been previously used for something else, then you might find that it is spidered without you having to do anything.
That's just the start though. It is unlikely that by doing this you will get very much traffic. If you do get traffic it is likely to be bots and referrer spam. Make sure that you set up Google Analytics on your site so you can see what's going on and can get some idea of how many visitors you are getting. So - you've got a site and it's registered with search engines... what now?
Getting to the top of Google is simple - and very hard. It's simple because all you have to do is get loads of websites which Google ranks highly to link to your website with the keyword you want to rank for as the text in the link. In other words if you sell shoes you might try and get links to 'Buy Shoes' on lots of websites.
The first thing to do is to determine which keywords you should be targetting. The easiest way is to look at other successful websites selling the same thing. If you use a tool like SemRush then you can see the actual keywords your competitors are ranking for (and also the keywords they are paying for - but more about that in a later post).
You can also use various other online tools to find keywords. The reason that it's hard to rank on Google especially for a new site is that it is not easy to get lots of links back to your website on lots of high ranking sites. In fact this one factor is essentially the key factor of internet marketing. If you have a way to do this then you will be far more successful than anyone else. It used to be the case that you could post to forums and your signature would be picked up with a link to your site, however that mostly no longer works. This is also the reason why on blogging sites you will see lots of comments like 'Great post - thank you for that interesting information'. The persons name will probably be a keyword that links to the store they are trying to promote.
The good news that there are lots of other things that you can do to promote your site. In the next post I'll be talking about Article Marketing, Content Marketing, Article spinning and lots more!
