Naming Your eCommerce Business

By Adam  |  22 Jun 2015 11:00:00

What's the first thing people will notice about your business? What's the thing that's going to give them a first impression? The high quality goods or the low prices? No. The fact is, that no matter how odd it may seem, the first thing people are likely to notice about your business is its name. Either your business will pop up from a Google search and people will see the name written there, or somebody will tell someone else about your business. Whatever happens, they hear the name first. Of course, I don't want to overstate it; a name is just a name, but it's important that your name reflects your business and its identity. If your business sells children's birthday party supplies, you want a fun name and, if your business sells caskets and gravestones, you'll want something that sounds serious and mature.

So, if you're a little worried about finding the right name for your eCommerce business, then there are services out there that can help you. One of these services is Lean Domain Search. Lean Domain Search, of course, also ties in to the naming of your domain, which is also very important. Here's how it works: you write in the 'keyword' of your business (which, if you sold books, would be 'books') and then it pairs that keyword with lots of other words and lets you know all of the domains that are available. If you're business is only in its first stages of development, Lean Domain Search could be a good way of finding a name; and not only will you find a name, you'll find a name which you know you can get the domain for.

Another option is GoSpaces, which is essentially quite similar to Lean Domain Search. Here you write in a key word related to your business and, again, they pair the word with other words, even suggesting domain names, and it is down to you which one you go for. It'd be quite a shame if you had a business name in mind, one that you were really set on, only to find that that business already existed or that the domain was already taken.

Wordoid is another of these services, but this one gives you a greater degree of control when generating the business names. This time, it actually gives you completely new words to use: rather than just, for example, suggesting "Interesting Books" it might suggest "Booktation" or some other new word which gets across what your business is about. You can choose whether your key word is at the start of these new words, in the middle, or at the end, and Wordoid aims to only give you options which "look nice and feel great." Even if you don't end up using it as your business name, generating words on Wordoid can be fun!

Finally, I'll tell you about one last business name generator. Impossibility! is, in its own words, "the best domain name generator ever" which is quite a claim! Again, you write in your keyword and it gives you suggestions of free domains and you can choose whether or not your keyword comes before or after an additional word. Like the others, it's certainly very helpful.

So, if you're struggling to name your new business, help is at hand with all of these services. Once you've decided on a name, it's time to really get the ball rolling. You can get started with Sellr to create your own eCommerce website right away (free of charge!)
