Thanksgiving eCommerce

By Adam  |  8 Nov 2015 12:00:00

We know that a large number of Sellr-users are based in England (or elsewhere in the UK) and it's reasonable to assume that those UK Sellr users might not think that a blog post about Thanksgiving will be relevant to them. Thanksgiving is not celebrated in the UK and a large number of you may not even know when it is. Well, I can tell you that Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth Thursday of November (this year it will be on the 26th of November) and, actually, it would be a good idea to keep it in mind, even if you don't live in America.

When you run an eCommerce website, your customers can come from any part of the world, and America is a big part of the world! Many of your customers may be coming from the USA. Since people from all over the world might be coming to your website, it could therefore be a good idea for you to acknowledge Thanksgiving in some way. Think of what people do for Thanksgiving: they hold big family gatherings and enjoy a large meal. If any of your products are the kinds of things that people will need for these events (such as fancy cutlery) then you should do all you can to draw attention to it, both on social media and on your home site. As well as selling products which people might use for Thanksgiving, you also need to consider that the day of Thanksgiving is a day on which American customers might do more buying. Some think of Christmas as the next big thing to come after Thanksgiving and so, as the day begins to wind down, they might head onto the internet so that they can then get started on their Christmas shopping. People are also generally more likely to be at home on Thanksgiving, and if they get bored they'll go online and if they go online, they might want to do some shopping... As you can see, there are many reasons that Thanksgiving might see an increase in sales and having promotions or social media campaigns to tie into it will really sharpen this sales spike.

So keep in mind that just because there's nothing special going on in your own country, it doesn't mean nothing's going on elsewhere in the world. Indeed, if you did something to intentionally acknowledge a celebration in a country which rarely receives any form of mainstream coverage, then the people who take part in that might be very pleased with your business. The internet can be used anywhere and your customers could be anyone, so it makes sense to try and appeal to as many people as possible. If you do do something with your business for Thanksgiving, then I hope it will be a success. But if you don't even have an eCommerce website, why not sign up to Sellr and make one (or have one made) right away? Now is the perfect time of year to do so!
