What is SEO?
You may have heard the term SEO used when reading about online marketing, you may even have a full understanding of the concept, but if you don't, I want to use this blog post as a general introduction to the idea. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, which is basically just the ways in which you can try to ensure that your website is more likely to come up on searches through Google and other search engines.
So what SEO techniques can you use to ensure that your eCommerce website comes up in a lot of searches? Well, you can start with your domain. Firstly, it's a good idea to buy your own domain, and, if you do, there are things to take into account when choosing your name. Some people might think that they could just go for their full name for their domain, but that's a poor choice when it comes to SEO. Think of it like this: who's going to be searching for your name unless they already know you? The same goes for the name of your business, most likely, since most businesses have somewhat unusual names they are therefore not likely to be searched for unless the person already has knowledge of them. A good approach is to go for the name of the business followed by a word to describe the product and/or service you provide. If you sold handbags and your business was called HB-utility, then a good domain name would be www.HB-utilityHandbags.com.
Other than that, the main thing is content. You should open up a blog on your eCommerce website (I've written about this before) and update it as regularly as possible. You should update your blog with news in areas relating to your business as well as news about your business. Think about what your potential customers might be searching for on Google and write about it, then when they search for it, they'll find you! The more content you have, the more likely people are to find your website. Write titles which people are likely to write into Google word for word and make sure you tag every post with as many relevant things as possible.
